§For corporate IP and R&D teams

Patent intelligence for R&D teams that would rather see it coming

We give in-house IP and R&D teams the analyst capacity to watch competitors, map fields, prune portfolios before fee windows, scout technologies, and map standard-essential patents, with the results kept current in Hoard.

§ 01Where you are

The competitor you can’t see is usually the one already filing

Good patent intelligence for R&D starts from an uncomfortable fact: the newest filings are the ones nobody can see yet. Most applications publish about 18 months after their earliest filing date, so by the time a competitor’s new direction shows up in the record, its first filing is already about a year and a half old. Monitoring is how you shorten that blind spot, by noticing patterns early rather than reacting to single documents late.

The trouble with most monitoring is volume. Alert feeds bury the one filing that matters under hundreds that don’t, and busy teams learn to ignore them. Our Watch digests are written by an analyst who reads the new filings against the questions you set, and tells you which few deserve a meeting.

The other pressure is cost. Keeping a single US patent in force to full term costs a large entity $14,470 in USPTO maintenance fees alone, under the current fee schedule. Multiply that across a portfolio and the question of which families still earn their place becomes a budget line. Pruning analytics rank keep, sell, license, or lapse candidates before each fee window, so the decision is made on purpose rather than by default.

Landscapes, scouting, and standards mapping round out the picture: where the open ground is, which outside technologies could fill a gap, and how your portfolio lines up against the standards your products implement.

§ 03A typical path

Building a standing view of your field

  1. 01

Scope with IP and R&D together

One scoping call with both teams, so the questions reflect product plans as well as legal priorities.

  2. 02

    Set the baseline

A landscape in Hoard Atlas establishes who files where, and how fast, across your technology areas.

  3. 03

    Profile and watch

Competitor profiles come first, then Watch digests on the cadence you choose, each one written by an analyst.

  4. 04

    Prune before the window

Hoard Ledger tracks fee windows, and pruning analytics rank candidates ahead of each one.

  5. 05

    Fill the gaps

Scouting finds outside technologies for the gaps the landscape reveals, and licensing or acquisition research follows if you want it.

Hoard: Watch, Atlas, and Ledger in one workspace

Hoard is our analyst-operated patent intelligence workspace. Watch carries monitoring digests, Atlas holds landscapes and assignee skylines, and Ledger tracks portfolio records and fee windows. Access is by invitation, included with relevant engagements or quoted as a standalone subscription. Explore the platform.

§ 04Questions

Questions from IP and R&D teams

Something else on your mind? Call (505) 357-5188 or write to info@metadragons.com.

Does this replace our patent analytics software?

Usually not. Many teams already have tools and lack the analyst hours to use them well. We supply the reading, the judgment about relevance, and a documented record, and Hoard holds the results.

Who can see what we are watching?

Only your team and the analysts assigned to you. Watch topics are confidential, files are kept in US-based systems encrypted in transit and at rest, and client materials are never used to train AI models.

Can you tell us whether a patent is essential to a standard?

No. Essentiality is a legal judgment. We provide technical concordance between declared patents and standard sections for your counsel and licensing team to evaluate.

Who makes the keep-or-lapse decision?

You do. Pruning analytics rank candidates and show the reasoning. The decision, and any legal review, stays with your team. Our guide to keeping or lapsing patents covers the trade-offs.
