§Patent Brokerage

A patent broker that screens before it sells

We help owners sell patents and help companies buy them. Every sell-side engagement starts with evidence, success-fee terms are written down before marketing begins, and we tell you plainly when the market isn’t there.

Two halves of a cantilever bridge extend from opposite banks while a crane lowers a glowing final segment into the gap.

§ 01Context

What a patent broker should do first

A good patent broker spends a lot of time saying no. The brokered market is smaller than most owners expect: Richardson Oliver Insights put the 2024 brokered patent market at about $158 million, in line with 2022 and 2023. Buyers in a market that size see many offers, and they pay for evidence, not adjectives.

So our brokerage starts with research. On the sell side, we build a sale-readiness package before anything goes to market: evidence-of-use research limited to technical facts, a commercial assessment, and a ranked buyer universe. On the buy side, we write down what you need and screen what is available against it. Both draw on the same search and analytics work behind our valuation services, so nothing is done twice.

We don’t draft or negotiate agreements. Your own counsel does. We coordinate the transaction around them: the data room, the timelines, the introductions, and the paper trail. And because inventors are the people most often hurt by overpromising, every individual inventor receives our written disclosures before any engagement.

Most patents never sell. Knowing early which ones can is the most useful thing a broker does.

If the evidence is thin, we decline the campaign and tell you why, in writing.

§ 03Process

How a sell-side engagement runs

Each step ends with a decision that belongs to you.

  1. 01

    Screen

A free 20–30-minute scoping call. Inventors receive written disclosures first. If the evidence already looks thin, we say so.

  2. 02

    Prepare

A fixed-fee sale-readiness package in 3–4 weeks: evidence-of-use research, commercial assessment, and buyer universe.

  3. 03

    Decide

A written go or no-go. If go, success-fee terms are agreed in writing before any marketing starts.

  4. 04

    Market

Confidential, documented outreach. You see every contact and every response.

  5. 05

    Close

We coordinate diligence and timelines. Your counsel drafts and negotiates the agreement.

Questions about patent brokerage

How is a patent broker paid?

Fee structures vary across the market: upfront fees, commissions on the sale price, retainers, or a combination. With us, sale-readiness is a fixed fee quoted in writing, and success-fee terms are agreed in writing before any marketing starts. We publish no prices; your quote shows every term.

Can you sell a pending application or an idea?

Buyers mostly look for issued patents with evidence of use. Ideas and early applications rarely attract them, and we will say so on the scoping call rather than take a fee. For an idea, start with a Prior-Art Snapshot.

Do you arrange financing or investment against patents?

No. We don’t arrange loans, investments, or securities transactions of any kind. For lenders and investors, we provide data packs and commercial valuations.

Would licensing be better than selling?

Sometimes. If you want to keep ownership and earn from use, see licensing and commercialization. The research overlaps, so the choice can wait until the evidence is in.
