Patent search FAQ: straight answers, limits included
The questions we hear most about our scope, searches, analytics, drawings, valuation, brokerage, and how engagements work. Where the honest answer is no, or it depends, we say so.

§ 01Context
Before you read on
This patent search FAQ collects the questions people ask us before, during, and after an engagement. Most patent questions arrive as a tangle of legal, technical, and commercial threads. We have tried to pull them apart and answer the parts that are ours to answer.
If a term is unfamiliar, the patent glossary defines it. If your question is about quotes, NDAs, and delivery, how we work covers the full process. And if it is about where our work stops, scope and disclosures sets out the line in detail. These answers are general information, not legal advice.
§ 02Questions
About us & scope
Something else on your mind? Call (505) 357-5188 or write to info@metadragons.com.
Are you a law firm?
No. Metadragons LLC is not a law firm and is not registered to practice before the USPTO. We provide technical, analytical, commercial, and administrative services. We don’t give legal advice or legal opinions, we don’t prepare, file, or prosecute applications, and we don’t draft or negotiate agreements. The full list is on our scope and disclosures page.
Then who gives the legal opinion?
Your registered patent attorney or agent. Our reports are written for them to review and rely on. We coordinate with your independent registered practitioner, and if you don’t have one, we can share a list of independent practitioners to contact. We receive no referral fees.
Who do you work with?
Independent inventors, startups and grant applicants, university and lab technology-transfer offices, investors and lenders, corporate IP and R&D teams, and patent practitioners who outsource searches and drawings. Each group has its own page under Solutions.
Where are you based, and when can I reach you?
We are based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and serve clients across the US. Our hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Mountain Time. The contact page has our phone, e-mail, and address.
Are your engagement profiles real clients?
No. They are illustrative composites drawn from typical engagement patterns, with details changed and no real client depicted. We explain why on the engagement profiles page.
§ 03Questions
Search
Something else on your mind? Call (505) 357-5188 or write to info@metadragons.com.
Which patent search do I need?
It depends on the decision. An idea-stage inventor usually starts with a Prior-Art Snapshot. A filing decision calls for a Patentability Search. A product launch calls for a Product Clearance Search for your attorney. A dispute or a purchase calls for a Validity & Invalidity Search. Our patent search hub compares all five.
How long does a search take?
Typical turnarounds are 3 business days for a Prior-Art Snapshot, 5–7 business days for a Patentability Search, 4–6 business days for a Design & Interface Patent Search, and 2–3 weeks for a Validity & Invalidity Search or a Product Clearance Search. Rush timing is available when scope allows and is quoted separately.
Do you use AI?
Yes, to widen recall: semantic search plus classification and citation expansion. Then every reference is read by an analyst, and a second analyst reviews every report. The audit trail lists the AI tools used. See our method.
Will your search find everything?
No search can promise that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Applications are generally published about 18 months after the earliest filing date, so recent filings are invisible to every searcher. What we do promise is a documented search: databases, CPC classes, query strings, date cut-offs, and analyst notes, so your practitioner can judge its coverage.
Can you tell me whether my product is clear to launch?
No. A freedom-to-operate (FTO) opinion is a legal opinion that only a patent attorney can give. Our Product Clearance Search supplies the search your attorney’s opinion relies on, organized by feature and jurisdiction.
§ 04Questions
Analytics & Hoard
Something else on your mind? Call (505) 357-5188 or write to info@metadragons.com.
What is a patent landscape actually good for?
Decisions about direction: where to put R&D, which market to enter, who the real competitors are, and what to say in a grant proposal or investor deck. A landscape maps who files what, where, and when, and frames whitespace as hypotheses to test, not conclusions.
What is Hoard?
Hoard is our analyst-operated patent intelligence workspace. Watch handles monitoring with analyst-written digests, Atlas holds interactive landscapes, and Ledger tracks portfolio records, public status, and fee windows. Read the platform overview.
Can I just sign up for Hoard and use it myself?
Access is by invitation, and every workspace is set up by an analyst. Hoard comes with relevant engagements, or as a standalone subscription quoted to your scope. Ask us for a walkthrough.
Do you tell us whether a patent is standard-essential?
No. Essentiality is a technical and legal question, and we give no essentiality opinions. Our Standards & SEP Mapping maps declared patents against standard sections with technical concordance, for review by your counsel.
§ 05Questions
Drawings
Something else on your mind? Call (505) 357-5188 or write to info@metadragons.com.
What do you need from me to start drawings?
Whatever shows the invention best: sketches, CAD files, photos, prototypes, or a draft specification from your practitioner. First proofs typically arrive in 3–5 business days for utility drawings and 4–6 business days for design drawings.
How many revisions are included?
Two revision rounds are included on drawings. Changes that come from a new version of the invention, rather than corrections, are quoted before we start them.
What format do the drawings come in?
USPTO-format PDF, with source files on request. US rules set the sheet size, black-line requirements, margins, and minimum numeral height, and we prepare to them (37 CFR 1.84).
Can you draw GUIs, icons, projections, or AR designs?
Yes. USPTO supplemental guidance announced in March 2026 addresses computer-generated interfaces and icons, including projections and holograms (USPTO). What to claim, and how, is a decision for your practitioner.
§ 06Questions
Valuation & brokerage
Something else on your mind? Call (505) 357-5188 or write to info@metadragons.com.
How much is my patent worth?
We answer that with a commercial estimate: a range built from cost, market, and income approaches, with every assumption stated. It is a business-planning estimate, not a fairness opinion, tax appraisal, or investment advice. See Commercial Patent Valuation.
Can you guarantee that my patent will sell?
No, and no one honestly can. Sale-readiness typically takes 3–4 weeks, and marketing campaigns typically run 3–9 months with no guarantee of a sale. If the commercial evidence is weak, we tell you plainly before you spend on marketing. See Sell Your Patent.
How are you paid on a sale?
Sale-readiness work is quoted as a fixed fee. Brokerage success-fee terms are written down and agreed before any marketing starts. Nothing is billed that wasn’t quoted or agreed in writing.
Who drafts the purchase or license agreement?
Your counsel. We coordinate the transaction, including the buyer universe, introductions, and the data room, but we don’t draft, review, or negotiate agreements.
Should I keep paying maintenance fees while my patent is on the market?
That is your decision, and it is often the central trade-off. Paying keeps the patent alive and saleable; lapsing saves the fee but ends the asset. Our maintenance-fee calculator shows the windows, and Portfolio Pruning Analytics weighs them across a portfolio.
§ 07Questions
Working with us
Something else on your mind? Call (505) 357-5188 or write to info@metadragons.com.
How do I get a quote?
Book a free 20–30-minute scoping call. We send a fixed-fee written quote within one business day of the call, and nothing is billed beyond it without your written approval. See how we work.
Why don’t you publish prices?
Because scope varies too much for a price list to be honest. A search on a simple mechanism and one on a biologic are different jobs. A fixed quote after a short call tells you the real number before you commit.
Will you sign an NDA?
Yes, before any technical disclosure. Please keep confidential details out of your first e-mail. We sign the NDA first, then you share.
What happens to my files?
Client files are handled in US-based systems, encrypted in transit and at rest, and never used to train AI models. On request, we delete them within 30 days of project close. Our privacy policy has the details.
Can you work directly with my patent attorney or agent?
Yes. Many reports go straight to the client’s practitioner, and we coordinate with them throughout. You decide who receives the deliverables.
